Ethoca, RDR, and CDRN do not prevent chargebacks from PayPal Wallet, Affirm, Amazon Pay, Cash App Pay, Klarna, or any other non-card payment methods.

See the following sections for a deeper look into each alert network.

1. Ethoca and CDRN

Coverage:

  • Ethoca: Strong global coverage for Mastercard and Visa transactions.
  • CDRN: Limited Mastercard, Visa, Discover, and AmEx coverage (US only).

Other networks:

  • American Express: Only for Reason Code 10.4 (Fraudulent, CNP)
  • Discover: Only for Reason Code UA02 (Card-Not-Present Fraud)
  • JCB (Ethoca only): Covered when co-branded with Discover
  • Cartes Bancaires (CB):
    • Stripe and Shopify attempt to process CB cards as Visa / Mastercard, making those chargebacks preventable by Ethoca.
    • If processed purely as Cartes Bancaires, they cannot be prevented.
How Refunds Are Handled With CDRN & Ethoca

Ethoca and CDRN alerts support auto-refunds only when an integration is connected. Without it, refunds must be done manually.

“Manual” means the must issue refunds in your processor dashboard. “Auto” means refunds are triggered automatically by Chargeback.io.

2. RDR

Enable RDR (Rapid Dispute Resolution) if you want the most Visa card coverage. RDR only covers chargebacks related to Visa cards.

Most payment processors (e.g., Stripe) don't know how to handle RDR and will label them as chargebacks. However, they're not actual chargebacks. See this guide for more information.

How Refunds Are Handled With RDR

Verifi automatically issues refunds on your behalf with RDR. Manual refunds are not supported.

Can I Get Duplicate Alerts?

Ethoca and CDRN can sometimes trigger alerts for the same dispute, which may cause duplicate charges. Chargeback.io will refund all duplicates.

Mark the alert as "Duplicate" and file a Manual Credit Request with this guide.

RDR alerts occur at a different stage in the dispute process and never create duplicates. Visa sends TC15 messages to the acquirer (your business bank) on behalf of the issuer (the customer’s bank).

Ethoca and CDRN operate directly between the merchant and issuer.
