How do I Find BINs for Transactions?
This guide shows you how to find issuer BINs (also called IINs) when troubleshooting missing alerts.
Sometimes a Chargeback.io specialist will ask you for issuer BINs (first 6 digits of the card). Without them, Verifi and Ethoca can’t dig into why certain chargebacks slip through.
⚠️ Issuer BINs aren’t the same as acquirer BINs.
Acquirer BINs are the ones you provide when connecting your account to Ethoca or Verifi for RDR. If you’re looking for those, check out this guide on finding BINs and CAID.
How to Find Issuer BINs for Stripe & Other Processors
Stripe doesn’t provide issuer BINs because of PCI DSS rules.
For other processors, you can try requesting BINs directly, but most won’t be able to give them to you.
How to Find Issuer BINs for Shopify Payments
1. Open the transaction timeline.
2. Click the entry that says “$X.XX was authorized using…”
3. Click “Information from the gateway.”
4. Find the BIN:
- Easiest: Press Ctrl+F / CMD+F and search for “first digits” or “iin.”
- Or scroll to Payment Method Details and look for IIN or First Digits.
- The issuer BIN will be a 6-digit number.
You will also find your authorization code (auth code) in this section. You'll also need this for troubleshooting missing alerts.
Here's a guide to provide more information on getting authorization codes.
5. Copy the BIN / IIN and send them to your specialist.
Issuer BINs vs. Acquirer BINs
- Issuer BIN: The first 6 digits on a cardholder’s card, identifying the bank that issued the card.
- Acquirer BIN: Identifies the bank or processor that services a merchant.
Merchants register acquirer BINs to receive Rapid Dispute Resolution (RDR) alerts. Issuer BINs appear on customer cards and control how transactions route back to the issuing bank.
