Learn how to get your acquiring BINs and CAID to set up RDR

This article applies to merchants who need their acquiring BINs and CAID in Chargeback.io to activate Rapid Dispute Resolution (RDR) chargeback alerts.

This article doesn't apply to merchants who need an issuer BIN from a transaction for troubleshooting or for a Support request.

What to Know

You can use acquiring BINs and CAID to enroll in RDR instead of ARNs. In some cases, BINs and CAID can lead to faster RDR enrollment.

1. BIN and CAID Requirements

Before you request or submit BINs and CAID, confirm that they meet the requirements below:

  • Acquiring BIN: One or more acquiring BINs that are 6 to 8 digits long.

  • CAID: 1 CAID that contains 1 to 15 characters.

    • Don't use a customer card BIN (AKA issuer BIN).

Don't assume your Merchant ID is your CAID. In some cases they match. In other cases they don't.

2. Restrictions

Before you move forward, check whether any of the restrictions below apply to your processor or account setup:

  • If you use OceanPayment, then the processor won't provide BINs or CAID.

  • If your Shopify store is based in France, then the processor won't provide BINs or CAID.

  • If you use shared BINs, then you can't enroll in RDR with BINs and CAID.

Getting your acquiring BINs and CAID from your payment processor usually takes 1 to 2 business days.

How to Get Your BINs and CAID

You can get your acquiring BINs and CAID in one of these ways:

  1. Ask your payment processor’s support team

  2. Check your payment processor VAR Sheet

If you don't already have access to your VAR Sheet, then contact your payment processor’s support team.

Ask Your Payment Processor’s Support Team

When you contact your payment processor, ask the agent to escalate your request to a specialist.

First-line support often doesn't provide acquiring BINs and CAID. A specialist usually handles this request.

Send this message to the specialist:

Hello. Can you please provide my acquiring BINs and CAID? I need them to activate Rapid Dispute Resolution alerts with a chargeback prevention service. Thank you.

Scenario 1: If Your Payment Processor Refuses the Request

Some processors may say they cannot provide acquiring BINs and CAID.

If support refuses the request, then:

  1. Ask for the request to be escalated to a specialist (if not already)

  2. Contact another support agent

  3. Repeat that you need your acquiring BINs and CAID for RDR activation

Requesting acquiring BINs and CAID is a valid request. It should not create a red flag on your account.

Scenario 2: If You Can't Get Your BINs and CAID

If your payment processor won't provide your acquiring BINs and CAID, or if you have shared BINs, then the only other way to activate RDR chargeback alerts is to provide at least 4 Visa ARNs.

FAQs

If I use more than one payment processor, which one should I ask?

Ask the processor that actually processes your payments.

For example, if you use Shopify and Stripe, and Stripe processes your payments, then ask Stripe for your acquiring BINs and CAID.

Can I use one BIN and CAID set for multiple merchant accounts?

If you have multiple merchant accounts, then you need to provide all related BINs and CAIDs for those accounts.

If I change my billing descriptor, do I need new BINs and CAID?

No. Changing your billing descriptor does not require a new acquiring BIN or a new CAID.
