This article applies to merchants using Chargeback.io who need to locate a tokenized wallet payment in Stripe or Shopify. It covers Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay, and similar tokenized card payments.

It doesn't cover ACH, PayPal, buy now pay later methods, or standard non-tokenized card searches.

Before You Start

If you are trying to locate a tokenized payment, then check these rules first:

  • Authorization codes are only available for transactions processed within the last 30 days.

  • This method only works if a value appears in the Auth.Code column in your Chargeback.io dashboard.

  • Stripe Link payments do not show authorization code or issuer data unless Wallet Mode is enabled.

  • If Wallet Mode is not enabled for Stripe Link, then contact Stripe Support to turn it on.

The search can take up to 3 minutes per transaction.

Method 1: Use the Authorization Code to Confirm the Transaction

If an authorization code appears in Chargeback.io, then use it to confirm the transaction.

Authorization codes are 6 digits long. If the code in your payment processor matches the code in Chargeback.io, then you have confirmed the correct transaction.

If the codes do not match, then keep searching.

1. Find the Authorization Code in Stripe

If the payment was processed in Stripe, then use these steps:

  1. Open the transaction in Stripe.

  2. Scroll to Events and Logs.

  3. In the All Activity column, find the event that says “The payment X for $X has succeeded.”

  4. In the From Stripe column, click “See all X lines.”

  5. Search the expanded data for "authorization_code": XXXXXX.

To move faster, press Ctrl + F on Windows or Cmd + F on Mac and search for authorization_code.

If the code matches the Auth.Code value in Chargeback.io, then the transaction is confirmed.

If you don't see an authorization code, then move to the next verification method.

2. Find the Authorization Code in Shopify

If the payment was processed in Shopify, then use these steps:

  1. Open the transaction timeline in Shopify.

  2. Find the payment entry.
Example: A $1.99 USD payment was processed using a Mastercard ending in XXXX via Apple Pay.

  3. Expand the dropdown.

  4. Scroll to Information from the gateway.

  5. Under Payment Method Details, find authorization_code" => "XXXXXX.

  6. Compare that six-digit code to the Auth.Code value in your Chargeback.io dashboard.

If the codes match, then the transaction is confirmed.

If you don't see an authorization code, then move to the next verification method.

Method 2: Compare the Issuer or Bank

If you can't confirm the transaction with the authorization code, then compare the issuer in your processor to the bank shown in Chargeback.io.

  • In Stripe, Shopify, or other payment processors, check the Issuer

  • In Chargeback.io, check the Bank

If those details match, then you may have found the right transaction.

This helps narrow the search. It does not confirm the transaction on its own.

If the issuer or bank doesn't match, then keep searching.

Method 3: Review the Customer’s Behavior

If you still can't confirm the transaction, and you found some information that matches the alert, then review the customer’s account activity.

Look for signs such as:

  • Multiple refunds

  • A history of disputes

  • Other suspicious account behavior

If the customer behavior matches the alert details, then that can help you identify the likely transaction.

Use this method only as a fallback. It's not strong enough to confirm a transaction by itself.

Why Can't Chargeback.io Find Tokenized Transactions?

If a customer pays with Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or another tokenized wallet, then the full card details are hidden. That makes the transaction harder to find in your payment processor.
