If you’re already enrolled under alert networks and just want to set up NMI, skip to Step 2.

Step 1: Add Enrollment Details

In this step, you’ll enroll your billing descriptors into each alert network.

1A. Before you Start

NMI does not provide descriptor(s), ARNs, and BINs and CAID(s) since it’s a gateway and not a processor.

To continue with Step 1B, you must find these values in the payment processor you have connected to NMI. And if you don’t have ARNs, use one of the alternatives in this article.

Once you have descriptor(s) and ARNs (or BINs and CAID), continue to 1B.

1B. How to Add Enrollment Details

  1. In the sidebar, click Alerts.

  2. From the dropdown, choose Configure.

  3. Find the network you want to enroll in (e.g., Ethoca), then click + Enroll More Descriptors.

  4. Enter:

    • The descriptor(s) you want to enroll in.

    • ARNs for those descriptors, if you have them.

      1. For RDR: Add at least 4 ARNs, or provide your acquirer BIN and CAID.

  5. Click Continue.

Once done, continue to Step 2.

1C. Enrollment Timelines

  • Ethoca / CDRN: Typically live within 12 hours.

  • RDR: Up to 7 business days; during backlogs, it can take up to 14 days.

  • ℹ️ See this guide for details on setup timelines.

Step 2: Connect NMI

Follow these steps to connect NMI to Chargeback.io:

  1. In the sidebar, click Integrations.

  2. Find the NMI card and click Connect.

  3. Click Next through the prompts until you reach the screen asking for your API Key.

    1. See the next section for a guide on finding this.

  4. Add your API Key.

  5. Click Connect.

Connection completes instantly in most cases.

How to Find API Keys in NMI

1. Follow these steps to find this in NMI:

  1. Sign in to your NMI account.

  2. In the sidebar, click Options.

  3. On the dropdown, click Settings.

  4. Find the Security Options box and click Security Keys.

2. Create your API Key:

  1. Click Add a New Private Key.

  2. Enter a name for the key (e.g., Chargeback.io).

  3. Assign it to the appropriate username.

  4. Under Key Permission, check API.

  5. Click Create.

  6. NMI will redirect you to your created Key(s).

3. Copy your information:

  1. Find the Security Key with the name you assigned it.

  2. Under the Key column, click copy or select the key

    1. Don’t copy the Key ID.

  3. Navigate back to Chargeback.io and paste it into the API Key field.

Step 3: Set Up Auto-Refund

Skip this step if you want to automatically refund all disputed transactions, regardless of amount.

Use this step only if you want to set a maximum amount for automatic refunds and handle higher-value disputes manually.

To set an auto-refund threshold:

  1. In the sidebar, click Alerts.

  2. Choose Configure.

  3. Open the Auto-Refund tab.

  4. Make sure the toggle beside Ethoca and CDRN is turned on (green).

  5. Click Edit.

  6. Set your auto-refund threshold (the maximum transaction amount that refunds automatically), then save.

⚠️ Transactions above the threshold appear as manual alerts and require action. Here’s a guide that’ll show you how to manage manual alerts.

Unresolved alerts can still result in chargebacks.

Step 4: Add a Balance

You need a positive balance to exit Demo Mode and start enrollment.

Follow these steps to add a balance:

  1. In the lower-left corner of your dashboard, click Account Settings.

  2. On the overflow menu, click Balance.

  3. Under Current Balance, click Add Funds.

  4. Enter the amount you want to add and click Continue.

How payment works:

  • Funds charge to the card you added during signup.

  • If your balance is zero, you can’t add a new card from the dashboard.

    • To update your payment method in this case, contact our support team.

How to Disconnect NMI From Chargeback.io

  1. In the left sidebar, click Integrations.

  2. Find the NMI card and click Disconnect.

⚠️ Disconnecting NMI does not stop alerts. To stop receiving alerts, fill out this disenrollment form.
